What is Judo?

Kodokan Judo is an Olympic sport , a martial art, a method of self defense, a physical education and a way of life. Judo is a Japanese term meaning "the gentle way." It stresses the principles of maximum efficiency with minimum effort and mutual welfare and benefit. Judo encompasses a wide range of techniques including throws, pins, joint manipulations, chokes, traditional forms and break falls. Judo was derived from the more ancient martial art of Jujutsu. Professor Jigoro Kano, the founder of Kodokan Judo, developed a martial art that was more than just a conglomeration of techniques. It is a way of life.

| Passing of Dr. Sachio Ashida - Tuesday, June 23, 2009
Passing of Dr. Sachio Ashida
On Monday, June 22, 2009, Dr. Sachio Ashida passed away from a massive heart attack. He was recovering from a stroke from earlier this Spring. Dr. Ashida's daughter, Ms. Janet Johnson has asked for privacy and quiet time for their family. Please refrain from contacting the family for the time being. A notice will be sent out when the family is ready to communicate with everyone.
Dr. Sachio Ashida was born in Japan and relocated to the United States after WWII. This man accomplished so much in his lifetime. Besides being a highly respected sensei, he was one of the very few to be awarded Kudan 9th Degree Black Belt. He was indeed a true expert in all areas of Judo and actually lived by its principles. Dr. Ashida reached the level of IJF-A International referee, Olympic coach, and was also an international kata expert. When he was younger he was a much feared champion shiai competitor few wanted to face. Over the years he served on many national committeees, subcommittees and executive boards in various areas.
Dr. Ashida will truly be missed and will always be remembered as a great sensei.
